introductory retreat will be held in Winter 2006-07 for Drug
Treatment Court Personnel.
Based on the
work of Dr. Parker J. Palmer and the Center for Courage and
Renewal in Seattle, Washington, Courage and Renewal for Criminal
Justice Professionals provides an opportunity to step back from
one’s busy day-to-day challenges and consider “the larger
picture.” Experiential in nature, it offers a time of personal
reflection and transformation – a chance to examine questions
that lie at the heart of who you are and what you do in your
work and your life, and how and where they intersect.
We invite
you to apply for Courage and Renewal Retreat for Criminal
Justice Professionals (link to pdf).

Communicating Values in Today’s Corporate Legal Culture: The Role of Storytelling
To help lawyers learn about how leaders can use narrative to
transform corporate legal culture, the Center for Law and Renewal invited
author Stephen Denning to lead Minneapolis lawyers in a day-long, hands-on
workshop in February 2007 at Dorsey & Whitney law firm. Author of The Leader’s Guide to Storytelling:
Mastering the Art and Discipline of Business Narrative, Denning offered his
experience at the World Bank and in the field of knowledge management as ways
to communicate ethics and values in the field of law.

Shifting
the Field of Law and Justice Retreat:
Possibilities, Principles and Practices
On January
23-25, 2006, the Centre convened 22 law and justice leaders and
educators to share information about existing communities of
practice and learning strategies that seek to shift the field
toward a healing and the law orientation. Representatives of law
schools, bar associations, university-based leadership
academies, private law firms, courts, and public interest law
training organizations explored together a variety of
experiential learning models that promote collective change in
the law through personal transformation.
Out of this
gathering emerged a clearer vision of new possibilities for
transforming the field at the personal, institutional and
community levels; the principles and values underlying the
desired new possibilities; and the types of practices and
learning strategies most likely to support transformation.
(Click diagram at right) Participants also explored
strategies for building a national learning community that could
support a variety of communities of practice. |

Mississippi Spirit of Justice Retreat
In
collaboration with the Fetzer Institute’s Generosity of Spirit
project and the
Mississippi Center for Justice the Centre
sponsored a retreat that brought together a diverse group of
community leaders, including private and public interest
lawyers, judges, educators, philanthropists, government
officials, clergy, and grass roots activists. As the catalyst
for a community healing project for post-Katrina Mississippi,
the retreat’s goal was to expand and empower the circle of
participants (both lawyers and non-lawyers) in Mississippi’s
historic movement to end discrimination and poverty.
Using the
Generosity of Spirit curriculum [see:
www.learningtogive.org], the retreat created an atmosphere
for participants to share their individual stories and gifts,
and identify what roles they want to play in writing a new
collective story of Mississippi as The Social Justice State.
Moving between the personal and the collective, the retreat
format encouraged participants to explore how the inner work of
becoming more authentic and “known” in the company of their
colleagues could liberate personal and collective gifts for
healing social justice problems. At the end of the retreat,
participants acknowledged the tremendous value of creating space
for work that renews, revitalizes and transforms – in the midst
of the tactical work needed to advance justice and racial
reconciliation.
The Centre,
in partnership with the Fetzer Institute, local funders and
other Mississippi-based institutions, hopes to offer Generosity
of Spirit retreats to other groups in the state, including
higher educational institutions, bar groups, faith-based
communities, and racial reconciliation groups. |
